Helena Josephs, Island Flavors And 'Tings
Helena Josephs moved from Jamaica to Florida in the late 1980s, and launched a career in real estate.
A decade later she shifted gears and joined the culinary world. The move was no surprise to family and friends, for whom Helena had been hosting holiday gatherings and dinner parties for years.
Helena's restaurant, Island Flavors And Tings, brought classic dishes and unique combinations to Gulfport. "Our recipes are national dishes, seasoned to perfection with a little bit a dat and a little bit a dis," she says. The shop also features a bakery with homemade treats and a marketplace that sells Jamaican spices and other products.
A few years after opening the restaurant, Helena expanded with a catering business fittingly called THE CATERER, and has hosted events with more than 1,000 people, including dinners for the Super Bowl XLIII, Great Explorations Children's Museum and the Poynter Institute.
